Flyte Tawny Owl Nest Box - made in Dorset by Flyte so Fancy.

The Tawny Owl is the most common in Britain, and the most frequently seen and heard owl; it is about the size of a wood pigeon. Primarily a woodland species of wild bird, they have adapted to live almost anywhere there are trees, even suburban gardens.

We have crafted these Owl Boxes to suit their nesting habits so they can be positioned in woodland trees to encourage the nesting and breeding of these lovely creatures.

See our photos of the beautiful Beebo when she visited us for our Owl Day in January (2020).

They prefer farmland copses, as well as more extensive areas of woodland and forestry. It is doubtful you would find Tawny Owls roosting in a building and certainly not nesting in one. They naturally like to roost in tree cavities but will take readily to purpose-made roosting boxes.

Although a mature wooded garden would suit them, they are very sensitive to disturbance and can be quite aggressive, especially when sitting on the nest, so a garden near children or a road may not be ideal. Also, in urban areas, they can be prone to vandalism so it would be wise to install the box at a height of at least 4m.

The Flyte Tawny Owl Box is approx 2ft 8in tall and 1ft 9in front to back (incl. roof) so it is quite a large nest box and weighs 12kg. See the Specifications Tab.

The large square opening at the front is the optimum size to encourage Tawny Owls and the depth inside ensures they can keep the owlets safe once hatched. There is a brass hinged access hatch at the front for cleaning access.

At the back, there are metal braces screwed into solid blocks (top and bottom) to give a good mounting point. Swivel these metal braces round into the position you require and, using both available holes, screw them to your tree. We don't supply the screws as we would not know what you are screwing it to and therefore how long the screws need to be.

Tawny Owl box

The box arrived promptly, is really good looking and very well made. A friend has installed the box and I'm now hoping that passing owls will discover it and decide to nest there in the spring!

Well made

Really chunky, well made heavy nesting box.
Have not worked out how to open flap for future cleaning though ( seems fixed by internal fixing.)

A really well made nest box, delivered very promptly.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review - great to hear that you're happy with the Owl Box.
We'd love some photos or updates if/when any new occupants take up residence :)
